February 2nd also marked an important date for farmers who celebrated Candlemas Day, which marked the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. If the groundhog saw his shadow it would mean 6 more weeks of winter so they’d turn around and go back into their burrows to hibernate for 6 more weeks. If he didn’t see his shadow, he would see that as a sign that spring was arriving and would not go back to hibernation. It is ironic that today we’re talking on Groundhog day, regardless of whether he saw his shadow or not. So maybe we should be asking the question ourselves: Are we going back into hibernation or is spring around the corner? We can play this analogy out as it relates to how we react in our own careers these days.
